Beautiful Washington County is the Birthplace of Texas and the perfect place to call Home. Located between Houston and Austin on Highway 290, it is just a short, scenic drive to these main metropolitan areas. Washington County is filled with genuine Texas History and new Small-Town discoveries around every corner. It is home to multiple cities and communities including Brenham as the county seat, Burton, Chappell Hill, Independence, Washington, Gay Hill, Greenvine and Zionville.

Washington County is named after George Washington, the first president of the United States. It is known as "the birthplace of Texas" because on March 1, 1836, Texas delegates met to formally announce Texas' intention to separate from Mexico and to draft the constitution of the new Republic of Texas. Texan independence was then declared on March 2, 1836 during the Convention of 1836 and the signing of the Texas Declaration of Independence.

Whether you are looking for your new Hometown, an afternoon shopping trip, family weekend, or a Texas History Museum to visit, Washington County has exactly what you are looking for. The cultures of the original pioneers are evident today and have been proudly passed through the generations. With multiple Shops, Museums, Parks, Historic Sites, Restaurants, Farms, Wineries and Breweries and an annual County Fair, Washington County, Texas has it all!
