Fayette County is named for Marquis de Lafayette, a Frenchman, and American Revolutionary War hero. It was established in 1837 from land set aside by Colorado and Bastrop Counties and is home to more than a dozen historic properties, like Rutersville College, one of the first colleges in Texas, built-in 1840.
